Albanese pledges $8.5 million tourism boost for Central Australia if re-elected

Zak Kirkup -

Central Australia's tourism industry is potentially set for a boost, with the Albanese government announcing on Wednesday evening an $8.5 million election commitment aimed at revitalising the iconic Red Centre and attracting visitors back to the region if re-elected.

At the heart of Australia lies some of our nation's most remarkable landscapes, including Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and Watarrka (Kings Canyon). Recent years, however, have presented significant challenges for local tourism operators.

Recognising this, the proposed investment aims to attract tourists, encourage fresh experiences, and support local businesses. The package includes a substantial $5 million for Tourism Central Australia to lead a targeted attraction campaign aimed at bringing visitors back to the Red Centre.

Additionally, $2.5 million will establish the Alice Springs Tourism Development Fund, which would encourage tourism operators to develop new and innovative offerings. This initiative seeks to reinvigorate Central Australia's tourism appeal to both domestic and international visitors.

Acknowledging the struggles faced by smaller operators, the federal government's commitment also includes $1 million in Revival and Resilience Grants, intended to help small boutique tourism operators in Alice Springs stay open and operational during recovery.

Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy underscored the critical role of tourism—particularly First Nations tourism—in the local economy.

"Tourism and First Nations tourism is a crucial part of the Central Australian economy, supporting local jobs, local businesses and local communities," she said.

Member and Candidate for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour MP expressed strong support for the initiative, calling the funding "a vote of confidence in our region."

The lifelong Territorian and former Deputy Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, who has cultural links to the Tiwi Islands and Central Australia, added: "Whether it's a small eco-tour company, a cultural experience, or a new tourism development, this support will help get local people into jobs and keep the heart of the NT beating strong."

This election commitment seeks to ensure Central Australia returns to prominence in Australia's tourism narrative, maintaining the Red Centre's iconic status among travellers worldwide.

The electorate of Lingiari has been held by the Labor Party at every federal election since 2001. It is considered a key seat in the upcoming election on 3 May 2025, currently held by Labor with an estimated margin of 1.7 per cent.
