Indigenous community housing provider Noongar Mia Mia will build a new residential complex for Elders and their carers after partnering with a leading precast building technology firm.
The sale of a parcel of Development WA land in Woodbridge has helped secure the new housing for First Nations Elders, with construction in the hands of leading tech-focused builder NXT TEC.
Development WA said providing secure, residential housing for Elders and their carers was in recognition of their contribution to community, with the unique project dedicated to providing homes for them.
Noongar Mia Mia, an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, was contracted to purchase the 1,695sqm site at the Midland estate, which will be used to construct 11 new accessible units.
Using NXT TEC.'s innovative NXT™ Building System, the project will utilise 100 per cent WA labour and suppliers and will raise the bar for sustainable building standards.
The residential complex will be built to a NatHERS 7-Star Energy Rating, and includes solar panels on the roof, which lowers utilities and operating costs.
Planning for the residential complex is under way, with construction due for completion in 2024.
The 11 units are located close to St John of God Midland hospital and essential amenities, including retail shops and public transport, which will be enhanced by the WA government's Metronet East Redevelopment Scheme, part of its revitalisation of Perth's eastern corridor designed to attract more businesses, residents and tourists.
Development WA's urban renewal program for Midland not only encompasses new, high-quality transit links, but a world-class health and education hub, plus 7500 new jobs, with almost $1 billion invested by the government and private sector.
Development WA acting CEO, Dean Mudford, said Noongar Mia Mia would own and manage the complex, and also receive advice and support throughout the project, which was subject to planning approval.
"We recognise the importance of this housing project and our agency is proud to support the delivery of safe and secure housing for Aboriginal Elders and their carers," Mr Mudford said on Monday.
Noongar Mia Mia managing director, Tina Ugle, said the housing project was an important acknowledgement of the support, passion and hard work Indigenous Elders had provided over many years, and acknowledged additional financial support from the Sisters of St John of God and the Estate of Sonya Rodgers.
"By building safe and secure accommodation for the Elders in the next stage of their life, it's a great way to give back," she said.
"Being able to do so means a lot to our organisation and the wider community."
NXT TEC.'s chairman and managing director Natasha Di Ciano said the company's mantra was providing quality, affordable housing and it was proud to support housing for Elders.
"We are honoured to support Noongar Mia Mia in providing this 11-unit residential complex," she said.
Noongar Mia Mia secures quality, long-term housing and provides culturally-safe tenancy and property management support for First Nations people across Perth's metropolitan area.
