New program strengthens Indigenous employment pathways

Joseph Guenzler -

CVGT Employment has launched its first Deadly Employment Connections program for Indigenous participants in Mildura.

The four-day program, held from 9 to 12 December 2024, is part of CVGT Employment's Workforce Australia initiative.

It aims to support Indigenous participants in achieving personal, educational and employment goals.

CVGT Employment's First Nations coordinator, Aunty Rhonda Penney, said the program connected participants to community and culture.

"Participants connected with community and culture, helping them to become future ready and culturally strong," she said.

Workshops and hands-on activities provided participants with essential skills and knowledge.

One participant said, "I learnt so much," while another said, "it boosted my confidence."

The program featured guest speakers from Mildura Police, Mallee District Aboriginal Services (MDAS), Anglicare, and Indigenous Project Management (IPM).

The initiative is designed to address unemployment among Indigenous Australians.

"It provides life skills, empowering course content, and connects participants to culture, employers, and local Indigenous support," Aunty Rhonda said.

CVGT Employment's Mildura manager, Tahleesha Beer, said participants were highly engaged throughout the workshop.

"Participants actively contributed by bringing guest speakers, creating modules, and brainstorming ideas for future workshops," Ms Beer said.

"They even formed their own group, 'Deadly One', which quickly attracted new participants, including families."

Painting was a highlight for many, offering a chance to connect with culture.

Employment opportunities remained a key focus, with participants scheduling upskilling sessions for the following day.

Letizia Training and Development will deliver food handling and responsible service of alcohol (RSA) training to support participants in gaining employment.

The week concluded with a celebratory BBQ.

"We are incredibly proud of the participants who completed the workshop," Ms Beer said.

"The next Mildura workshop is planned for the New Year, reaffirming our commitment to supporting Indigenous communities."

Participants praised the program's structure and atmosphere.

One said, "Being the first mob to do this was great!"
