Record demand sees seven new members join Indigenous tourism collective

David Prestipino -

The Discover Aboriginal Experiences portfolio continues to grow in line with record demand for Indigenous tourism.

Seven new members will be welcomed into the collective in 2025, taking the total number of member operators to 55.

The Discover Aboriginal Experiences (DAE) portfolio has grown 45 per cent in membership since the collective launched, and comes after the latest report from Tourism Research Australia confirmed the burgeoning demand for Indigenous tourism experiences around the country.

The report detailed the number of international visitors partaking in Aboriginal-guided tours jumped 56 per cent in 2024, compared to 2023 data.

The Federal Government has taken notice of the growing demand for new experiences with First Nations people on Country.

In a bid to attract more visitors from the country's number one tourism market, China, it recently granted tourism funding from its National Foundation for Australia-China Relations.

One of the 27 grant recipients was the Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC), which said the funding would help deliver its new Ancient Cultures Meet tourism initiative.

"In our experience, China does not even make it into the top 10 markets for many indigenous tour operators in Australia," WAITOC chief executive Robert Taylor said.

"This project is an important first step in the journey to fixing that problem."

Tourism Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison said the continued expansion of the DAE collective was reflective of the growing demand for Aboriginal-guided tours from international travellers.

"It is such a delight to welcome these seven new members into the thriving Discover Aboriginal Experiences portfolio," Ms Harrison said.

"It represents the largest annual growth in members since the collective launched.

"Every year we see more and more interest in quality Indigenous experiences that offer insights into Australia's rich 65,000 years of history.

"And every year there are exciting new Aboriginal-guided experiences perfect for an international visitor's itinerary."

The seven new members joining the program are Yura Tours (QLD), Taribelang Bunda Cultural Tours (QLD), Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre (QLD), In Culture Tours (WA), Southern Cross Cultural Tours at Lullumb (WA), El Questro – Injiid Marlabu Calls Us (WA) and Tiwi Tours (NT).
