New Aboriginal Investment NT chief investment officer takes the reins

Tiesha Hewitt -

Aboriginal Investment NT's new Chief Investment Officer Brian Wyborn took the reins this week.

The appointment came after the launch of the organisation's 2024-29 Strategic Investment Plan in September.

Mr Wyborn will oversee the organisation's investment activities, continuing the momentum and work completed to date in driving economic prosperity alongside social and cultural wellbeing in Aboriginal communities across the NT.

A Torres Strait Islander and Papua New Guinea man, Mr Wyborn brings more than 15 years' experience in both the public and private sectors, including a decade specialising in investment, portfolio and strategic advisory roles.

Prior to his appointment at Aboriginal Investment NT, Mr Wyborn was the Managing Partner at First Australians Capital (FAC) — an Indigenous-led impact investment fund which builds investment readiness and capital solutions for Indigenous businesses.

Mr Wyborn's role at FAC was focused on ensuring Aboriginal people can overcome systemic barriers to finance and build new economies.

Before his tenure at FAC, Mr Wyborn was a Director at JBWere, where he advised clients across various asset classes, including fixed income, equities, managed funds and alternative investments.

He also worked closely with Indigenous organisations across Australia in sectors such as health, Native Title, and Royalty Trusts.

Outside of his work with Aboriginal Investment NT, Mr Wyborn will continue to serve on several investment committees and boards, including the Noongar Boodja Trust, Australian Regional and Remote Community Services, and Philanthropy Australia.

Aboriginal Investment NT Board chairperson Barbara Shaw expressed her excitement at the appointment, confident that Mr Wyborn will bring a wealth of experience and strategic thinking to the organisation.

"Brian's long-standing dedication and experience in empowering Aboriginal communities through investment will be a vital asset to Aboriginal Investment NT as we take our next steps in the five-year-roadmap outlined in the Strategic Investment Plan," Ms Shaw said.

"The Board is committed to working closely with Brian to ensure a seamless integration into the role to ensure our vision of empowering Aboriginal communities across the Territory is realised."

The organisation said Mr Wyborn's appointment will play a key role in delivering Aboriginal Investment NT's overarching objective, which is to "build collective wealth and wellbeing for current and future generations of Aboriginal Territorians".
