Indigenous entrepreneur develops "Sync (WA)" - an app to connect FIFO workers

Dianne Bortoletto -

Sync (WA) is a new app designed to address the unique challenges of FIFO life, and to foster a supportive and connected work environment that benefits both employers and employees.

The Sync (WA) protype is ready and the new app needs a funding partner to finish its development to get it ready for launch.

The brainchild of decade-long FIFO worker, proud Ngarluma/Yindjibarndi, Noongar/Yamatji man Percy Ryder, Sync (WA) was born as a result of his own struggles with shiftwork and not being able to easily connect with family and friends.

A boilermaker by trade, Mr Ryder said his upbringing was based on the value of connection.

"I came up with idea when I was working FIFO and found it difficult to catch up with my cousins who were also working FIFO but on differing rosters," Mr Ryder said.

"I have had days feeling down at work, and when you think about catching up with family, friends, nephews and nieces, it gives you a boost, gives you something to look forward to."

Sync (WA) features include syncing rosters and calendars, scheduling, structured rest and relaxation, discussion forums, goal setting, support tools and resources and the ability to share updates with family and loved ones.

The father-of-three funded the protype himself with investment for the development of the website and capability statement from The Waalitj Hub.

"We are 80 per cent of the way there - we are looking for a partner to invest in Sync (WA) to help with the last 20 per cent so we can get it launched."

He estimates that it will take up to four months to complete the app after receiving funds to finalise its development.

Mr Ryder is interested in hearing from mining companies who would like to invest in Sync (WA) for a share of the equity.

Registered with Supply Nation and the Noongar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sync (WA) is not only for Indigenous FIFO workers.

"My dream is for Sync to be the go-to app for FIFO and anyone in any kind shift work industry," Mr Ryder said.

"The end game is when people feel lonely and isolated, the first thing they think about is using the Sync app, there's nothing else like it on the market.

"Happy people are connected people, and happy workers result in a more productive workforce."
