Cairns' Bama Services has launched a new cleaning business, offering flexible hours for women starting careers or re-entering the workforce.
For more than a decade, Bama has provided job opportunities for those with limited skills, focusing on helping Indigenous people move off welfare and build meaningful careers.
Traditionally operating in industries with few women, Bama Services utilised a Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation WISE grant to run a Working Women's Focus Group.
The group explored ways to employ mothers and women returning to work, leading to the idea of starting a cleaning business with flexible schedules and contracts.
Timekka Hunting, a member of the focus group and an early participant in Bama Services' cleaning program, described the experience as both rewarding and educational.
As a young mother, Ms Hunting said she appreciates being able to work while having enough time off to care for and support her family.
"I've been enjoying working and it is flexible, being able to choose my hours and days I work so I can still care for my family," she told the Cape York Partnership.
"A couple of the cleaning girls are also on the Bama maintenance crew and do lawnmowing and other stuff as well.
"I have gotten good skills and Bama provides for us, some of us are able to get our white cards and we also have access to a cleaning program if we want to upskill."
The new venture provides employment while meeting the needs of school leavers, those entering the workforce, and individuals balancing family or caregiving responsibilities.
The cleaning service is a natural extension of Bama's success, reinforcing its commitment to offering more opportunities for women to engage and thrive.
After establishing the cleaning service workers from the School to Jobs program and others were employed to clean the Bama Services head office, the Cape York Partnership Baninh Yeeum Cairns office, and facilities in Aurukun.
They also secured a contract with QBuild to clean new social and government modular homes.
The service has since expanded to include specialty cleaning for tough jobs.
With early success, Bama Services has hired a Cleaning Supervisor to support its growing operations.
In the competitive cleaning industry, Bama Services continues to stand out, securing business and making an impact.
