Protecting culture and Country will be key areas of focus for the new chairperson of Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC.
Puutu Kunti Kurrama Traditional Owner Merle Ashburton was appointed new chairperson on Tuesday, bringing with her strong corporate governance experience, serving both on the Corporation's Board and that of its business development arm - PKKP Enterprises.
Coming to the role with a background in business and education, Ms Ashburton, a proud Kurrama woman, said she would continue the good work of outgoing chair Terry Drage, who she thanked for his commitment and hard work to the role during the past year at the Corporation, which has a 12-month rotating system for the position.
"I am excited and honoured to take on the Chairperson role as the Corporation continues to work hard to achieve our strategic goals and help meet the aspirations of the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura peoples," Ms Ashburton said.
"A key focus for our board remains protecting Country and culture."
Ms Ashburton has for years strongly advocated for increased opportunities for children and young people, both in her hometown of Onslow and more broadly.
"We are focused on empowering the next generation to achieve not only their own goals but the shared ambitions of the PKKP peoples," she said.
Prior to Merle joining the PKKP Enterprises Ltd Board, Ms Ashburton served on the Traditional Land Council with PKKP Trust and the Local Implementation Committee.
She also sits on various other local committees and has a Certificate in Small Business.
