Researchers hope to uncover the major barriers First Nations businesses experience when trying to access appropriate capital for sustainable growth.
The Australian National University and NAB Foundation research project aims to identify better ways for financial systems to break down systemic barriers.
Findings from the research project announced today are expected next October, with the ANU findings supported NAB Foundation's grant of $205,000 for the initiative via ANU's First Nations Portfolio, led by Professor Peter Yu.
The research would help understand First Nations business needs through key stages of the business life cycle, and also identify effective strategies for lenders, investors and government to unlock access for Indigenous businesses.
ANU First Nations vice president, Professor Yu, said the investment would help drive change among the Indigenous business sector, particular those primed for growth.
"Our collaboration with the NAB Foundation is a commitment to fostering an environment where First Nations businesses can thrive," he said.
"Through this research, we can create a more inclusive financial ecosystem that supports long-term success and economic self-determination.
"First Nations businesses are at the forefront of driving self-determination and enhancing financial capability and inclusion.
"Through our partnership, we aim to strengthen financial resilience, increase business and employment opportunities, and dismantle the barriers that have historically impeded access to financial services."
NAB group executive, business and private banking, Rachel Slade, said the foundation had a big role to play supporting First Nations businesses.
"First Nations businesses are a cornerstone of the communities in which they operate, and NAB is committed to helping these businesses flourish," Ms Slade said.
"This research will help us to better understand the unique needs and challenges faced by First Nations businesses and provide insight into how we can support them to reach their maximum potential.
"When First Nations businesses grow, they play an important role in making Australia's economy more diverse and inclusive, and the benefits go straight back into the community. We whole-heartedly want to help foster their success."
The research is set to be published in October 2025.
