Zach Green, known as the Storyteller Chef, has shared a post on his Instagram and LinkedIn account calling out a racist commenter going by the name 'Maurice Ryan'.
Based in Port Hedland, Mr Green, 35, has been a professional cook for 17 years, working in a number of kitchens across Australia, packing up and moving to a new place when he was triggered with trauma.
National Indigenous Times and The Indigenous Business Review have interviewed Mr Green in the past, and stand with him in solidarity.
'Maurice Ryan', posted: "Aboriginals only ever cooked on an open fire amongst the dirt and coals....very limited variety and definitely NO metal tools to cut anything...stop f****** romanticising some Stone Age way of life. Go to Darwin and NT just to see the appalling number of aboriginals with type 2 diabetes... which is Self caused by lazy lifestyle...no exercise...and so much sugar intake and sh** foods."
Like alcohol, sugar was introduced to Australia by Europeans and unleashed on a population who had never consumed it before.
Mr Green posted that the comment was aimed at one of his events.
"This comment was aimed at one of my dinners. And I wish I could say it shocked me but the truth is, I cop this kind of thing all the time. Week in, week out. And I'm tired," Mr Green stated.
"I'm tired of the racism. I'm tired of the ignorance. I'm tired of people speaking about my culture like it's worthless.
"But instead, I get comments like this. People acting like we're stuck in the past. Acting like we've done this to ourselves. Acting like they know our story better than we do.
"But I'll keep going. I'll keep cooking. I'll keep telling the truth on the plate, and in my voice. Because this is more than food. This is resistance. This is pride. This is survival."
Melbourne-born and a descendant of the Gundjimara people in south west Victoria and Palawa people in Tasmania, Mr Green believes in the healing power of food.
Now settled in Port Hedland and happily married, Mr Green is set to cook at a number of events in Western Australia in June and July and is planning events in Queensland and NSW later in the year.
Mr Green will cook at Pilbara Pride in Port Hedland on 15 June. He has also collaborated with North West Brewery Co for a dinner on July 12 under a full moon at Hearson's Cove near Karratha in celebration of Indigenous food, culture, and community, which is a fundraiser for support crisis support line 13 YARN.
Mr Green was recently named an ambassador for 'The Burnt Chef Project, a community not-for-profit project designed to remove the stigma surrounding mental health in the worldwide hospitality trade.
"I am so proud to be a part of The Burnt Chef Project, and support them in their mission to break the stigma around mental health, provide vital support, and create lasting change in hospitality, around the world," Mr Green posted on LinkedIn.
"Together, we can build an industry where seeking help is seen as a strength — not a weakness."
