Industry leaders from Australia's flourishing Indigenous business sector were recognised at a deadly celebration in Alice Springs on Saturday night.
The Northern Territory Indigenous Business Network took its 2024 celebration of Blak excellence to the Red Centre, after the success of last year's Blak Business Awards.
Commercial construction company DICE took out the night's major award for NT Blak Business of the Year, while Pinnacle Plumbing's Stephen Stavrinos was named Best Blak Male Business Owner and Rachel Ellis from Centre Pest Management named Best Blak Female Business Owner.
Bush food supplier Kungkas Can Cook was honoured on the night as Best Blak Bushfoods and Botanicals business, while No Fixed Gallery won Best Blak start-up.
The inaugural gala awards dinner last year proved a spectacular evening, with prestigious recognition of the accomplishments of Blak businesses in the NT across a variety of categories.
Saturday night was also a chance for attendees to celebrate excellence across the Indigenous business sector, and proved invaluable last year for NTIBN members to network and meet patrons, allies and corporate partners, while reconnecting with others across the growing Aboriginal business landscape.
NTIBN chief executive Jerome Cubillo, a proud Larrakia and Wadjigan man, said the awards challenged misconceptions about private sector Indigenous businesses.
"This night really shows the high calibre of sophisticated Indigenous businesses across all industries and sectors," he said.
"We try to use the awards night as an opportunity to debunk many myths that Aboriginal businesses don't have skills and capability."
This year's ceremony was sold out well in advance, and reinforced the growing contribution Indigenous-owned businesses have made to the NT economy.
"It was a night for us to come together to celebrate the current environment and successful Aboriginal businesses in the Territory," Mr Cubillo said
The 2024 awards were again supported by gold sponsor National Australia Bank and come ahead of a bumper 12 months for the NTIBN.
The network will help showcase Australia's flourishing Aboriginal business sector to lucrative global markets in 2025 when the Northern Territory hosts the 2025 World Indigenous Business Forum.
Mr Cubillo expected that event to position many Indigenous businesses in the box seat to promote and take advantage of the recent growth and interest in various established Aboriginal sectors, and emerging industries such as bush foods.
The forum will give Indigenous business owners and industry leaders an incredible opportunity to network and deal with entrepreneurs and advocates from around the world at the forum, which usually attracts 1000 delegates from more than 20 countries.
Hosted in partnership with Larrakia Nation, Indigenous Business Australia and the NT Government, Mr Cubillo said the forum's timing could not be better for First Nations businesses in Australia to leverage growth in the sector, which was four per cent compared to three per cent for non-Indigenous Australian business in 2022-23.
"We need to let Aboriginal business be what it is - commercial, for profit - we don't want to keep the government being a charity for Aboriginal businesses," he said after the NT was announced as event host earlier this year
