Seven young Indigenous Territorians are set to begin their professional journeys through the Indigenous Training Academy, an initiative by the Airport Development Group and Darwin Airport Resorts, aimed at fostering long-term career opportunities for First Nations people in the Northern Territory.

This year's trainees will gain practical experience in hospitality and business administration, industries that play a crucial role in the Territory's economic future. With structured training, mentoring, and culturally responsive support, the program equips participants with the confidence and tools to build sustainable, meaningful careers.

To celebrate and showcase ADG's commitment to Indigenous engagement, this month's Black Coffee networking event held on Larrakia Country, in partnership with ADG brought together Indigenous entrepreneurs, community leaders, corporate partners, and the new ITA trainees in a culturally safe and inclusive environment. Black Coffee events provide vital spaces for First Nations businesses to connect and thrive.

Samantha Watkins, Head of the Indigenous Training Academy, highlighted the importance of culturally aware career development:

"This is more than job training. It's about supporting Indigenous employees to thrive in professional environments and building strong career progression," she said.

ADG's approach, guided by its Indigenous Advisory Council, focuses on employment, cultural awareness, and partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and businesses.

As this year's cohort begins their traineeships, they do so surrounded by a supportive network and a strong sense of cultural pride—key ingredients in building a workforce where Indigenous talent is not only represented, but championed.
