Tjiwarl stalwart Bundarra secures Liontown lithium contract

David Prestipino -

Aboriginal owned and operated earthworks, construction and ore haulage service, Bundarra Contracting, has secured a run-of-mine loading contract at Liontown's Kathleen Valley lithium project in Western Australia.

The scope encompasses management of ore feed from the ROM pad to the primary crusher, along with essential earthworks such as road grading, dust suppression, and site rehabilitation.

The Kathleen Valley operation is in a culturally and environmentally significant region on Tjiwarl land, approximately 680km north-east of Perth.

Tjiwarl Native Title holders signed a native title agreement with Liontown in November 2021 and company managing director and chief executive Tony Ottoviano said the new contract with Bundarra continued its close collaboration with Tjiwarl and local communities, in respect of heritage and economic benefits.

Bundarra contracting managing director Brett Lewis and chief financial officer Patricia Lewis sealed the new deal with Mr Ottaviano and chief operating officer Adam Smits at the lithium miner's Perth headquarters on Tuesday.

Ms Lewis said the contract would only strengthen the relationship between the Tjiwarl community and Liontown.

"Through opportunities like these we can give back to our communities through employment, on-the-job training in a culturally appropriate environment," she said.

Bundarra had procured a fleet of new equipment to support its ongoing works at Kathleen Valley, including a Komatsu WA-900 and WA-600 front-end loaders and a Komatsu GD655 grader.

Mr Ottaviano said the company was proud to ink the new contract, which he said was a significant moment in its partnership with the Tjiwarl.

"The partnership brings together our expertise to safely and sustainably generate lasting value for Tjiwarl, local community and our shareholders … and support local economic growth through responsible mining," he said.

Liontown's production of the battery metals asset began in mid-2004 and the site has excellent grade and scale.
